A man drowned after trying out to be a lifeguard on Cape Cod Saturday morning, according to reports.

Orleans police told WCVB that the victim, in his 20s, was pulled from the water at Pilgrim Lake and taken to Cape Cod Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Cape Cod Times reported that witnesses said heslipped beneath the surface just before 9 a.m., and was found by a diver in 10 to 15 feet of water about half an hour later. He was about 150 to 200 yards from the shore.

The fitness test is conducted by the town as an annual event for those hoping to obtain a lifeguard position at Nauset Beach this summer, according to the report.

The victim’s name was not yet released.
