Red Bull’s annual Flugtag event took over the Esplanade on Saturday for a full day of flight — ahem, or rather, attemptedflight. The competition featured 29 area teams and their manmade flying contraptions as they put forth their best efforts to crash last. Plucked from more than 200 submissions, the 29 participating teams and their creations — ranging from a selfie stick to a malfunctioning MBTA train — launched off above the Charles River, bracing for their inevitable plunge. The Flugtag — which is German for “flying day” — is in its 25th year and found its annual winner in Team Flite-Riot of Braintree who made a 69-foot flight from a 22-foot-high deck. Ancient Egyptian-themed What Sphinx? and LovePop’s Something Wonderful came in second and third, sequentially.
