Safety is an important factor when searching for a place to call home, and a new report by the National Council for Home Safety and Security recently ranked the top 50 safest Massachusetts cities and towns based on reviews of the FBI’s crime statistics and their own population data and internal research.
Boston, the state's largest city with a population of more than 660,000, is not on the list. The average size of the cities and towns in the top 50 is 27,000. They average two violent crimes per 1,000 people.
Wayland, a town of 13,600 located about 20 miles west of Boston, was the safest. It recorded one violent crime and five property crimes in 2016, according to the survey.
