ABBA-cadabra! ‘Mamma’ is magic

Contemporary musical theater doesn’t get much better than “Mamma Mia!” And the current production at the Colonial Theatre is every bit as fun as when it first came to Boston in 2001.

In case you’ve somehow missed it, “Mamma Mia” is a megahit, Tony Award-winning musical starring the music of ABBA. Sure there’s a flimsy plot that keeps the story moving, and yes, there’s warmth, humor and a happily-ever-after ending. But at its core, “Mamma Mia” is pure, un-adulterated, campy, kitschy fun.

This production features a solid performance by Michelle Dawson as Donna Sheridan, the woman behind the Sam, Bill or Harry mystery that drives the storyline. But it’s Kittra Wynn Coomer who proves to be the audience favorite as Donna’s tough-talking BFF Rosie.

No matter how often you’ve seen it, “Mamma Mia” will still send you out into the street singing like a “Dancing Queen.” Go ahead, “Take A Chance On Me.”
