Boston Ballet has got a new ‘Etudes’

Boston Ballet wraps up its final performances of the season with “Fancy Free” — a the three-ballet program that is sure to leave you in a good mood.

In Peter Martins’ “Barber Violin Concerto,” Lia Cirio and Pavel Gurevich pair against Sylvia Deaton and Yury Yanowsky. It’s a perfect mix of classical and contemporary styles. Deaton and Gurevich’s duet is playful and light, but the work as a whole lacks cohesiveness.

Jerome Robbins’ “Fancy Free” features three sailors, led by James Whiteside competing to impress female passers-by while on shore leave. The spirited choreography is like watching a silent movie, taking more than just dance technique to pull off. It’s a fun, flirty work that BB has studied and executed flawlessly.

Saving perhaps the best ballet for last, Harald Lander’s “Etudes” is like a Degas painting coming to life. The ballet begins with barre work and ends with an intense finale. The silhouettes of ballerinas in classic tutus, prepping reiterate how precise ballet can be. The men steal the show on this one — Jeffrey Cirio, and Paul Arrais and Nelson Madrigal show what it means to be a professional.
