The U.K. has its knickers in a bunch over a magazine advertisement for the new Marc Jacobs fragrance "Oh, Lola!" featuring Dakota Fanning. According to People magazine, the British Ad Standard Authority pulled the ad after deeming the photo of the 17-year-old actress far too suggestive.
We still think of Fanning as the adorable, little child from "I am Sam," so this controversy is weird for us. The ad has been the subject of some debate in the Metro newsroom: Yes, Fanning is wearing a short dress and, yes, she is holding a large perfume bottle that's a bit questionably placed.
Some [Editor's note: OK, it was me] may ask, "How else would you hold a perfume bottle on your lap if you were sitting in that position?"
Well, let's see -- resting on a thigh? A hip bone, perhaps? But probably not sticking out from between our legs. That would be far too uncomfortable, most likely. To be honest, we probably would never be holding an over-sized bottle of Marc Jacobs perfume on our laps whilst sitting on the floor, so it's hard to say.
What's more surprising, though, is that the U.K., of all places, is so offended by the ad. This is coming from a country, after all, where naked women grace the pages of free daily newspapers. However, those women are all 18-years-old; Fanning is three months younger, which makes all the difference to the Brits, apparently. Fanning, though, is not the first celebrity to get nixed from British advertising for a "suggestive" ad. Beyoncé, too, had a commercial for her fragrance "Heat" pulled from the airwaves after it was ruled too hot for TV, according to E!.
It's not like Dakota Fanning is showing that kind of skin, so we'll just have to wait and see whether her ad finds its way back into British magazines come February 23 -- her 18th birthday.
