Foxy: The Complete Pam Grier
Well, not the complete Pam Grier — among the MIA is her 1974 Italian gladiator pic “The Arena” — but the Film Society at Lincoln Center’s retro on the blaxploitation queen has most of the goods, including latter works like “Jackie Brown” and the first Steven Seagal vehicle “Above the Law.” Grier will be present for some of the screenings, and will do a no-doubt mind-blowing Q&A on Sunday. Fritz Lang’s 1931 drama — in which baby-faced creep Peter Lorre broke through as a child murderer hounded by an angry mob and the actual mob — was a game-changer both for Lang and for sound film in general. (And the 1951 American remake by Joseph Losey is pretty good, too!) The great, grim portrait of mankind at its most fallible is the latest DCP restoration to appear at Film Forum. (Film Forum)
‘Philip Roth: Unmasked’
Philip Roth is unfairly stereotyped as a navel-gazer prone to elucidating on his libido (“Portnoy’s Complaint,” the David Kepesh trilogy, etc.). But there’s so much more to him, and this doc — part of PBS’ American Masters series — gets him to open up in ways he hasn’t previously. (Roth turns 80 on the 19th, by the way.) (Film Forum)
‘If I Were You’
Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden headlines this dramedy about a woman whose husband is cheating on him with a hot younger thing. Her attempts to outwit them lead to ridiculous situations, including starring in a very amateur production of “King Lear.” Co-stars Aidan Quinn and Leonor Watling. (The Quad)
