Rescued from VHS: The Doors broke on through 47 years ago today

On Feb. 4, 1967, The Doors released their debut album on Elektra Records. Many sources online claim the original packaging included extensive bios of the band, but actual photos of the documents seem to be a rarity.

Another rarity is this early promo video, shot in 1967 for “Light My Fire” as part of the ABC show “Malibu U.” What’s peculiar about this footage is that lead singer Jim Morrison doesn’t appear with the band as Robby Krieger, Ray Manzarek and John Densmore mime playing their instruments atop a fire engine on the beach while pretty blondes dance, smile and light matches. Sure, there’s a guy wearing the same shirt that Morrison wears in the closeups, but he’s got his back to the camera. And while Morrison was known for performing with his back to the stage, the guy here is clearly a stand-in, lacking the flowing locks and oddly angled sideburns that Morrison has in the closeups. The poster of the video says it’s Robby Krieger’s twin brother, Ron.
