A straw of one’s own

Many Diet Coke junkies like myself have a very specific way that they like to enjoy their caffeinated beverage of choice. For me, it has to be freezing cold aluminum can – absolutely no straw. Even if I just bought it at a bodega and the rat turds are sprinkled on top, I would rather spend ten minutes cleaning off the can than having to use a straw, which takes the bite out of the carbonation. That’s just my theory but if anyone has a scientific explanation for why drinking through a straw ruins the flavor, please let me know.

Plastic bottles are also unacceptable because they warm up the soda too fast. And while they have the handy feature of allowing the drinker to re-seal the bottle, I’d rather drink it all in one delicious go than have to re-open it and drink that flat syrup.

Why does carbonation make Diet Coke taste so delicious? And why is it so undrinkably disgusting when you get it as a flat fountain soda? If anyone has any theories, I’d love to hear them.
