Painting a room, or even just an accent wall, can feel like too much work for a renter — especially since you’ll likely have to paint it back to boring white when the lease is up. But you can still transform your apartment, without all the commitment, with removable wallpaper.

“Print in a space is so transformational and cool,” says Elizabeth Rees of Chasing Paper, a removable wallpaper company based in New York. “You’re able to get that DIY look and personality and not have to worry about being charged for damaging the walls.”

Chasing Paper sells peel-and-stick regular wallpaper and “chalkboard,” both available in 2 x 4 foot panels at $30 a pop. That’s right, panels, not rolls —Rees says the panels are more user-friendly, and the backing she uses, a low-tack adhesive, is easier to work with than vinyl.

“I usually describe it as a super sticky Post-It Note,” she says. “If you make a mistake, you can pull it right off and reapply it without losing stickiness.”

Access your space

When picking wallpaper prints and patterns, “think about colors, wall size and the size of your space,” says Rees. “A lot of it is based on personal preference but it’s important to really look at the space overall. It’s amazing how a few panels can change a feeling and look of a room, and how you feel in it.”
