Meet the Sitpack – a chair that fits into your pocket

Standing in line at bus stops, post offices and banks will never again be a tall order thanks to a foldable seat that fits in your pocket. The Sitpack folds out into a nifty seat supported by an adjustable leg made from seven telescopic tubes, all of which collapses to just 17cm in length and 7cm in diameter – about the size of your can of soda. “The point is to make resting available anywhere, without the hassle of complicated constructions,” Nikolaj Bak, co-founder of the Danish start-up Mono+Mono that’s behind the Kickstarter-listed device, told Metro.

What got the idea for the Sitpack off the ground?
— It all started when I went to a concert. After standing in line for hours, the only relief to my aching back and knees at the gig were these weird 3D puzzle-like chairs and inflatable nightmares. I thought, “Those chairs can be done smarter”, so I started looking around at what people were carrying on them, things that we accept to carry: water bottles, soda and beer cans, everything in the size range of a standard 500ml can. My team and I ventured out to create a sitting device with these dimensions.

What’s the concept behind the Sitpack?
— The point is to make resting available anywhere, without the hassle of complicated constructions, and at the same time to put a tall user at the same height as his smaller friends. Furthermore, many of us are carrying sports-related injuries and know the pain from standing for long periods on our own bodies, so the Sitpack helps alleviate that. What’s more, you are using your balance to rest on this one-legged seat –this stimulates your blood flow and thus maintains your concentration.

Staying concentrated doesn’t sound very relaxing…
— It is surprisingly easy to use and everybody who has tested it has been shocked to discover how safe and relaxed it makes you feel. You can even use it on moving trains and buses.

What makes the Sitpack so resilient?
— The material it’s made from – it’s polycarbonate, which is extremely strong and used to make riot shields.

So, potentially I could use this adjustable leg for self-defence?
— It’s not much use for self-defence. We have incorporated break-points to avoid misuse and injuries if used as a weapon.
