Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the murder of a Fashion Institute of Technology student in her Queens apartment in 2009.
Jose Martinez was arrested on kidnapping, murder, predatory sexual assault, criminal sex act and several other charges, according to police.
Carmen Saldana-Mundo, 23, was found naked and unconscious in her Astoria apartment by her mother on July 12, 2009. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide due to asphyxiation.
Martinez, who was a teenager at the time, allegedly followed Saldana-Mundo home from a party and forced his way into her apartment, The New York Post reports. Inside the apartment, it is believed that Martinez sexually assaulted the fashion student and then strangled her.
Martinez had been serving time for robbery when he was connected to the murder through DNA evidence, a law enforcement source told the Post.
