A 5-year-old boy was struck and killed by a minivan in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn on Sunday night, police said.

Rashard Charles was attempting to cross Empire Boulevard in the middle of the block about 8:30 p.m. when he was hit by a 2001 Honda Odyssey that was backing up on the street, police said.

The boy, who was accompanied by his mother and two other people, was knocked to the ground after being hit. Emergency responders transported the child to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of the minivan initially fled the scene but then returned, police said.
