Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer celebrated Women’s Equality Day Tuesday by pledging to register at least five women voters before the Oct. 10 deadline.
Brewer was joined by other elected officials and activists who spoke about the importance of continuing the hard work of women before them.
In the city, women earn 83 percent of what men earn, Brewer said. The numbers are lower nation-wide, and for African American and Latina women.
“So Women’s Equality Day also calls attention to the continuing need to break gender, class and race barriers, and foster … equal opportunity for all,” Brewer said. “It’s important, because if women don’t vote … policies don’t change.”
