Teachers at a Prospect Heights high school have raised nearly $20,000 for undocumented students who don’t qualify for financial aid but want to go to college.
A number of teachers at International High School, located on Classon Avenue opposite Prospect Park, joined together to create the International Dreamers Scholarship Fund after seeing one student after another who had the smarts and the motivation to go to college but lacked the resources because of their illegal status.
“It makes me feel helpless,” English teacherJoanna Yip told the Daily News.
The New York Dream Act, which would open the state’s Tuition Assistance Program to undocumented students, has passed the state assembly but is still waiting on senate approval.
The teachers are halfway to their total fundraising goal of $40,000. Donations can be made on the International Dreamers Scholarship FundWeb site.
