Exhilaration wins out for nervous Patriots fans

Feelings of nervousness and exhilaration came in waves over New England
Patriots fans yesterday before the latter finally won out.

The North Star bar erupted in a fury of excitement as the last
seconds of the AFC championship game came to an end with the Patriots on
top.

“There were just so many up and down moments where we were pulling
our hair out,” said an ecstatic Brendan Green, 25, of Medford. Green,
who was stationed in the corner of the bar with a group of friends, said
he has high hopes for the Patriots in the Super Bowl next month.

“I think we can pull this off,” he said.

The North Star was cluttered with Pats fans donning jerseys of their
favorite players, pacing anxiously about the bar, until the home team
took the win following a botched field goal in the last few seconds.

“Billy
Cundiff missed that kick because he has two ‘F’s’ in his name,” said
Dave Glaser, elated from the Patriots victory. “You can’t win anything
with two ‘F’s’ in your name.”

The blare of multiple televisions at the bar was drowned out by the
enthusiasm from Glaser and other cheering fans.

Marcus Mann, 27, got lost in the celebration.

“I’m just excited,” he said. “I think it was the defense that helped
us win tonight. It’s just great to see them make a name for themselves.
And it’s great to be here drinking PBRs from a bucket with friends.”

Outside the bar on Friend Street, revelers banged on the tops of
their cars as random hollers and screams came echoing down the alley.

“This is it! This is it!” yelled one fan.

A rare day for Boston sports

Yesterday was a good day to be a Boston sports fan. It’s rare enough for
three of Boston’s sports teams to play on the same day, forget about
all of them winning.

But that’s what the Celtics, Bruins and Patriots did and all in
dramatic ways.

The Celtics were able to pull out a win in the fourth quarter
against the Washington Wizards. Then, less than two hours later, the
Bruins earned a victory in a shootout. To cap it off the Patriots won
thanks to a missed kick in the last seconds.

The last time all three of those teams won on the same day in
regular or postseason play was Dec. 28, 2008.
