Facebook on Thursday announced that it has opened an office with an engineering team and called it “Facebook Boston” even though theoffice is actually located in Cambridge.

In a post on the Facebook Boston page, Ryan Mack, the site lead for Facebook Boston, said the engineering team will start small.

“Facebook Boston will be our fifth official engineering team, along with Menlo Park, Seattle, New York, and London,” Mack wrote in the post. However, the Facebook Boston page lists its address as 1 Broadway in Cambridge, which is also home to the Cambridge Innovation Center.

In his post, Mack had high praise for Boston, calling the Hub’s tech community “world-class” and said launching an office and engineering team here was “an easy choice.”

“Our engineering culture is incredibly important to us, so we are very deliberate when it comes to expanding that culture to new locations. But in many ways, Boston was an easy choice,” Mack wrote. “The tech community here is world-class, from the incredible academic institutions to the vibrant startup ecosystem to the bevy of global companies who have teams here. We are thrilled to have found a new home here and hope we can help the community continue to thrive.”

State leaders have been trying to convince Facebook to open some office in Massachusetts since its founder Mark Zuckerberg left Cambridge and Harvard for California’s Bay Area. Last year,House Speaker Robert DeLeo wrote an open letter to Zuckerbergthat talked up the Bay State.

Also on Thursday, DeLeo created his own Facebook page, according to the State House News Service. He posted a welcome message for Facebook.

“So pleased that eighteen months after writing to Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook announces a return to Massachusetts. Welcome back!” DeLeo wrote.

Mack urged those interested in working for Facebook to check the Boston jobs page.
