The Whole Foods planned for Gowanus will have a greenhouse on top of the store.

The company announced today that Gotham Greens will run the greenhouse, which they say will be the nation’s first commercial-scale greenhouse farm within a grocery store.

Gotham Greens already operates a rooftop greenhouse in Greenpoint.

The greenhouse will be 20,000 square feet and constructed on top of the 52,000-square-foot store.

The store is scheduled to open later this fall.

The grocery store was approved last year after some residents fought it, arguing that it would endanger affordable space for artists and hurt local businesses.
