The head of a grassroots organization that has targeted Mayor Thomas Menino as an out-of-touch elderly politican will help kick off the mayoral campaign of City Councilor John Connolly tonight.

Greg Selkoe, the founder of the Future Boston Alliance, has said he would support a young candidate who can bring change to the city. He told Metro that he wants theallianceto “have a good time making change.”

Connolly, 39, announced his bid for mayor last month and his initial speech focused mostly on making changes to the city’s school system. Menino, 70, has yet to announce a decision on whether he will seek re-election this fall.

Connolly’s campaign described tonight’s kick-off event at the Omni Parker House as “an innovative rally.” It will include a performance by local band Bad Rabbits.

Also during the event, Connolly’s campaign promised the unveiling of “an innovative social organizing tool” that will engage voters.
