Four guards and several inmates were injured when a fight broke out late Friday night at the Rikers Island jail complex, officials said on Saturday.
"A fight involving a number of inmates in a high custody housing unit” broke out at the George R. Vierno Center, the City of New York Department of Corrections said in a statement. “Department staff responded within minutes and the incident was resolved shortly thereafter."
Four correctional officers were treated for exposure to pepper spray and three inmates were treated for minor injuries at the emergency room before returning to the jail.
No major injuries have been reported and an investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.
In August, another riot at Rikers raged for an hour, apparently triggered by an argument over a grilled cheese sandwich.
