Hammered.org: Site promotes fun minus the hangover

Got nothing to do and feeling too hungover to drink again — or just don’t feel like drinking at all?

A former Northeastern University student has compiled the answer for you.

Ken Procaccianti launched the website Hammered.org this week. The site, and its e-mail newsletter, is essentially a calendar listing of events and things to do in and around the Boston area that aren’t alcohol-centric and would appeal to an audience of college students or young professionals.

“A lot of the college experience is about meeting people and making friends,” Procaccianti said.

“Meeting people shouldn’t be limited to screaming in someone’s ear while standing in a bar somewhere.”

The 28-year-old advertising executive said he doesn’t drink and didn’t throughout college.

When he finished with the men’s soccer team his sophomore year, he said it freed his time and he realized there was a “huge void” for people like him who wanted to have a good time without drinking. He founded a student group there with a similar mission and the website is a continuation of that.

“Students don’t realize that you can enjoy your college experience without alcohol or drugs,” he said.

Some students who were introduced to the site at orientation this week said it appeals to them.

“Something like that would really benefit people,” said Marin Peterson, a Northeastern freshman from Rhode Island. “We all go out in groups … just to try and see some things.”

Procaccianti said he hopes the site will catch on because of the year-round events the city offers.

“There should be resources for people … if they prefer not to drink,” he said. “Boston is a great city. We have a lot of things at our disposal.”
