Queens Borough President Helen Marshall appeared confused as to whether John Liu was running for mayor during a Monday event held by the borough’s Democratic Party to endorse Christine Quinn, Politicker reports.

A reporter for a Chinese-language newspaper asked Marshall, 83, if she wished the party had instead backed Liu, who has a solid base of support within Queens. Marshall’s reply seemed to indicate that she was under the impression Liu was running for re-election as comptroller.

She reportedly reacted with surprise when City CouncilwomanKaren Koslowitz told her he was running for mayor, saying, “Oh, I like him, I don’t know why we didn’t endorse him, then.”

Marshall’s spokesman Dan Andrews later said Marshall misspoke.
