Man, 71, killed in jewelry heist

A Madison Avenue jewelry store worker was murdered yesterday during a brazen noontime robbery.

The thief reportedly demanded Henry Menahem, 71, and another worker at R.S. Durant Jewelers fill two canvas bags. They refused. The robber took out a pistol and said, “You think I’m kidding? This is real,” police told reporters. He then shot Menahem in the torso. He took jewels and is still at large.

A family friend who answered the phone at Menahem’s Long Branch home said, “The family is really in shock.” So was she. Menahem was her “favorite dancing partner,” she said.

A saleswoman at the Carolina Herrera boutique on the same block between 75th and 76th streets, said they “feel shaken. It can happen anywhere.”
