Man walks off Red Line platform

A 56-year old Florida man was pulled to safety after he walked off the southbound Red Line platform at Cambridge’s Central Square station Sunday, MBTA officials said.

Video surveillance shows the man, who was not identified, falling into the pit at 4:52 p.m., and promptly being pulled back onto the platform with help from his wife and bystanders.

According to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo, the man did not make contact with the third rail, but he was transported to Mt. Auburn Hospital for elbow and back pain.

“(He) said he fell into pit when he attempted to reach the northbound train (on the opposite track),” Pesaturo said. “He said he mistakenly believed the Alewife-bound train was the one he wanted.”
