MBTA: Far more fare evaders cited in 2012 compared to 2011

In 2012, Transit Police handed out 1,325 more tickets to people dodging fare on the MBTA than the previous year – almost a 40 percent increase.

In 2011 T police handed out 3,428 citations, but last year they gave out 4,753, according to MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo.

With a first-time offense costing offenders $50, the 2012 number means the T raked in about $237,650 in fare evasion citations last year.

MBTA police have dubbed the crack down “Operation Fare Game.” They said today they plan to continue coming down on people who try to dodge fare, saying in a statement: “In the coming new year Transit Police officers will continue to enforce fare evasion throughout the MBTA system in both a uniformed and plainclothes capacity.”
