Musicians for Earth Day want to inspire change

These activists are getting in tune with Earth Day.

As part of Earth Day New York, a concert this Saturday at Grand Central features bands that want to use their music to encourage people to save and protect the Earth.

Many of the bands proclaim lyrics or philosophies about treating the planet well and focus on making positive impacts on the world.

Patrick Ermlich, a music organizer from The Outlet Collective, said that they carefully chose the bands for that reason — not only to showcase New York’s music scene, but to highlight “inspiring change and taking action — the common threads that bind each artist together.”

For example, New York City-based hip-hop group Kinetics & One Love focuses on global warming in some of their music. Their song “The High Line” honors the city’s High Line, transformed from abandoned train tracks to an elevated park and walkway where New Yorkers can walk, read and relax.

And the Whispering Tree, a duo who are a vegan and a vegetarian, say they believe “a song can effect more change than a thousand politicians.”

Members of PushMethod, which is performing Saturday, said that for Earth Day, they want to raise awareness for developing better energy sources.

“You could also call it ‘human day,’ for it’s really the future and fate of the human race we’re fighting for,” Michael Dustin Youree of PushMethod said. “We need a healthy planet in order to have a healthy human race.”

And FlyinFisch, another scheduled performer, said that they try to use music to encourage people to help the planet.

“We want people to have fun and enjoy the possibilities of life, and an integral part of this means we must focus and make sure our one and only home, Earth, is healthy and happy too,” lead singer and songwriter Adrian Fischer said.

Fischer added, “It’s easy to lose sight of the impact that even the smallest positive action can make.”
