Three military veterans have completed their tours of duty in the Mideast and began new careers with the MBTA on Monday.[embedgallery id=150093]

There names are Shifty, Wire and Moxie — and they have tails. They are also the newest members of the MBTA Transit Police Department.

All three dogs will be in service together for the first time Monday.

The explosives-detecting dogs worked in Iraq and Afghanistan and recently completed weeks of specialized training that allows them to work in a civilian setting, according to the T.

The dogs are paired with Transit Police officers who have also served in the military.

Shifty’s handler, Ariane Thibodeau, is the only female hazardous materials technician in Massachusetts, according to the T.
