A 54-year-old gunman will be arraigned on murder charges in Brighton District Court today following a two-hour standoff that left a wheelchair-bound man dead yesterday.
Police arrested Randy Moore after he allegedly shot a 70-year-old resident and then barricaded himself inside a second floor room of the John J. Carroll Apartments on Ledgemere Road in Brighton.
What neighbors described as a quiet and friendly apartment complex for the elderly and disabled turned into a shooting zone swarmed by SWAT team members armed with heavy artillery.
According to police reports, Moore shot the disabled man who lived at the complex off Chestnut Hill Avenue, just after 11 a.m.
The victim was transported to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Moore allegedly shot at police, who were holed up in a basement after trying to help the victim.
Elderly residents were evacuated from the scene by bus, and police cleared out several neighboring houses.
A SWAT team and police helicopter were needed during the standoff, which lasted two hours.
Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said a negotiator managed to talk Moore into surrendering his weapons and turning himself in just before 1 p.m. yesterday.
Timothy Crawford, who lives next door to where the shooting took place, said he heard arguing and then a gunshot.
“It’s sad to see this happen,” he said. “I’ve never seen cops here before.”
Crawford said he moved to the complex six months ago and called the neighborhood “a safe place.”
