A woman died after a fire broke out at a home in Cambridge early Wednesday morning.

Fire crews were called to 240 Prospect St. about 3:55 a.m., according to the fire department.

The three-alarm blaze sent dozens of firefighters to the scene. When they arrived, there were flames shooting from the side of the three-story home.

A woman found in a second-floor apartment was pulled out of the burning building by firefighters. She had no pulse, said Cambridge Fire Department Assistant Chief Gerard Mahoney. Emergency personnel performed CPR and took her to a local hospital, where she later died.

Mahoney said the woman was in her mid-30s, but did not release her identity pending notification of her family.

Seven other residents made it out of the building and were taken to a nearby convenience store to get out of the cold. They were not injured and were being assisted by the Red Cross, Mahoney said.

Prospect Street was closed early Wednesday morning between Broadway and Hampshire Street as crews cleaned up from battling the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
