A freight train derailed in Westford and town officials said they were not notified about the incident for hours.

The Pan Am Railways train derailed near the Bridge Street overpass, according to town officials.

In a statement, Town Manager Jodi Ross said authorities were not made aware of the derailment until 9:30 a.m. Thursday. She said the derailment occurred at 11 p.m.

“We are having a meeting of the Local Emergency Planning Committee [Thursday] morning to review our emergency response procedures and we will be poised to activate a response as needed,” Ross said.

Town officials said that Pan Am Railways indicated that they do not consider the derailment an emergency situation.

No injuries were reported and the 14 cars that derailed were carrying supplies like lumber and paper, according to the Globe.

Westford Police said that Bridge Street will be closed between North Main Street and Pine Ridge Road as crews work to right the freight cars. Police will advise when the roadway is back open.
