The search for a Bronx man who allegedly shot his wife in front of their two young children — after the woman asked for a divorce — ended Saturday after he was caught in Maryland.
Rafael Herrera was located and taken into custody in Prince George, Maryland, police said, after fleeing Christmas morning when he allegedly shot his wife, Yadira Perea Saavedra, in their home at 967 E. 220th St. in Williamsbridge.
Saavedra requested a divorce from Herrera on Christmas Eve, New York police said. On Christmas morning, Herrera, 37, allegedly shot Saavedra, 27, while their children, an 8-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, were in their home. He then fled the home and remained at large until Saturday.
Saavedra was wounded in the arm and neck and was in stable condition at Jacobi Hospital, police said.
Police initially believed Herrera would flee to Mexico, where his mom lives, but as the search expanded they found him in Maryland — where he is thought to also have family, the New York Daily News reported.
Charges are currently pending, according to police.
