Chris Christie’s $300,000 snack and beverage habit

Chris Christie has been hungry lately.

The New Jersey Governor spent $300,000 of his $360,000 state-funded allowance over 5 years on food and beverages, the New Jersey Watchdog reported this week.

The report looked at Christie’s spending – between his yearly salary of $175,000 and yearly expenses stipend of $95,000.

The New Jersey Watchdog accessed Christie’s records of his spending from his private ledger, as he does not submit an official account of how he spends his salary and expenses.

They found that the governor spent $82,594 on concessions at MetLife stadium between the 2010 and 2011 game seasons – using a debit card on 58 different visits to the stadium.

From 2010 to mid-2012, when he famously had weight reduction surgery, he spent $64,687 on groceries – an amount that halved to $31,236 in the two years after.

Two New Jersey Assemblymen have introduced a bill that would force Christie to submit detailed expense reports to the State Ethics Commission website, the report says.

A spokesperson for the governor told the New Jersey Watchdog the spending was legitimate.

“The official nature and business purpose of the event remains the case regardless of whether the event is at the State House, Drumthwacket or a sporting venue,” said Kevin Roberts, Christie’s press secretary.
