Dee Milliner ‘not being shopped’

After an offseason where he added three starting-level cornerbacks to his roster, the New York Jets are not actively shopping Dee Milliner despite their apparent depth at the position.

Milliner, a first round pick of the Jets in the 2013 NFL Draft, has seen his brief two-year career in the league hampered by injuries and a rough rookie season. But he still has value in terms of development for the Jets and is still on his rookie contract, making him a pretty decent value for the team.

Reports earlier this week indicated that Milliner could be shopped around, something the Jets say that they’re not actively doing.

“I would say this, I wouldn’t want to kind of get into projecting or a guess, but I would say simply we’re very excited about Dee coming off of his injury and, again, making that position exceptionally deep and talented and helping our team win,” general manager Mike Maccagnan said Thursday on a conference call with the media.

“But I don’t want to get into that, there’s so much time that has to go by here. I don’t really want to go down that road. I’m just focused on getting Dee back on the field and, again, making that position extremely competitive and very talented.”

Milliner suffered a season-ending Achilles injury last October but when healthy has looked the part of a starting cornerback in the NFL. But he has battled injuries throughout his NFL career and came into rookie camp two years ago with a shoulder injury from college.

Last season even with Milliner healthy, the cornerback position was the weakest on the Jets roster and the secondary may have had the least talent of any in the league. But Maccagnan went out and addressed that in a major way, signing two former Jets in Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie as well as Buster Skrine, a tenacious cornerback from the Cleveland Browns.

Now with a healthy Milliner and a returning Marcus Williams, the Jets could potentially carry six or seven cornerbacks on their 53-man roster.

“Dee is obviously rehabbing from his Achilles injury and right now, I think going forward, I’m kind of excited to see Dee get back on the field. I mentioned this at the Combine, at my press conference there, I was saying this is not unique to any GM in the NFL, you can never have enough good corners,” Maccagnan said.

“I’m very excited about not only the players we’ve acquired but about the players with Dee, and actually Dexter McDougle also, coming back from their injuries to really make that position an exceptionally strong position on our team.”
