Seeing a deer in Manhattan would likely be equivalent to spotting a unicorn on its streets for many New Yorkers, but for several Harlem residents, the sight of a one-antlered deer was the best of both worlds.

Neighbors first saw the young buck in Harlem’s Jackie Robinson Park on Friday and alerted police, the New York Post reported. The deer later made his way to 154th Street before taking a dip in the East River. Lindsay Thomas of the Quality Deer Management Association told the paper that early December’s mating rut causes bucks to “drop their caution, and they chase does everywhere and they end up in weird places.” Unless the deer begins looking for love in the streets of Upper Manhattan, police “are treating it as what it is — a deer in the woods,” an unidentified officer said.
