PHOTOS: Fidel Castro makes rare public appearance in Havana

Former Cuban President Fidel Castro, 87, made his first public appearance in Havana since April 2013. The aging leader attended the opening of a Havana cultural center, sponsored by one of his favorite artists.

He was greeted with applause by local residents, according to video aired on state television.

Fidel Castro’s brother, Raul Castro, has been in power since 2006, when Fidel stepped down amidst ailing health. He has been reclusive since, rarely venturing to public which often fuels rumors about whether or not he has died.
