Immigration problems force Rainmen to axe first-round pick

The Halifax Rainmen have cut loose their top selection in the Premier Basketball League draft.

The Rainmen confirmed yesterday they will terminate the contract of Omar Weaver, who was selected sixth overall in October’s draft.

The 6-foot-8 guard/forward is a veteran pro who has three years worth of experience in the PBL.

Weaver, from Washington, was having trouble gaining entry to Canada and the Rainmen didn’t want to wait.

“We really needed him,” Rainmen owner Andre Levingston said.

“He’s a very exciting kid and we were excited to have him, but we have to go with what we have here.”

Kendel Provet, a guard from New York, will also have his contract terminated.

Levingston said Provet had previously signed but the Rainmen didn’t announce the deal.

Levingston said he is hoping to announce two new arrivals today, a 6-foot-10 centre and a 6-foot-9 forward to join the 15 players at training camp in Yarmouth this week.
