KONY 2012: Jason Russell not facing charges for public meltdown

After the freakout heard and seen (thanks to TMZ video) around the world, the Internet has made KONY 2012 filmmaker Jason Russell its latest object of derision.

Russell was spotted storming through the San Diego streets (in broad daylight) completely naked while flailing his arms, cursing the devil, pounding on the cement and inappropriately touching himself. A firestorm of jokes, memes and criticism ensued.

The good news for Russell? He will not face criminal charges for his outburst, which was reportedly caused by factors like stress and exhaustion — and not alcohol or drugs — according to his family.

Reuters also reports that Russell is still undergoing involuntarily psychiatric hold, which is when a person can be in custody for up to 30 days if police believe he or she is a danger to themselves or others.

UPDATE: Slate’s Explainer asks if it is possible for an otherwise-healthy man like Russell to snap because of stress and exhaustion and concludes, “not without an underlying mental illness.”
