The Invention Of Lying
Rating: *** 1/2
After last year’s sadly unpopular Ghost Town, The Office star Ricky Gervais returns to TIFF with his directorial debut. Set in a world where no one has ever told a lie, Gervais invents the art of bending the truth. It’s a glossy high-concept affair filtered through the British comedian’s distinct brand of discomfort humour and packed with an all-star cast.
The emotional and dramatic scenes might not fit in with this material as well as it does in Gervais’ best work, and the never-ending lineup of celebrity guest stars can clog up the narrative, but as far as mainstream Hollywood comedies go, it doesn’t get much better than this. I can’t lie, I laughed quite a bit (lame joke, but true).
