Turkey basters aren’t just handy at Thanksgiving anymore. In a curious case of impulse and quick thinking a Michigan man saved a baby’s life by using a turkey baster to open her blocked air passage.

According to local Michigan station KSN.com, 5-month-old Nessa Shoup of Ludington, Mich. was having trouble breathing while being babysat by two family friends. When one of them called 911, Bill Hogenson, who happened to be working nearby and heard the commotion, rushed over. Upon arriving, he found the baby turning blue and struggling to breathe.

Hogenson then performed CPR on the baby, but she continued to stuggle.

Following his instinct, the former marine deputy quickly searched the kitchen drawers and cane across a saving grace; the turkey baster, which he used to suck ut the blockage in Shoup’s nasal cavity and airways.

“I went into the drawer and found a turkey baster and used the turkey baster to clear her nasal passage and her airway,” Hogenson told KSN. “Patted her on the back some more, then spun her around and got a good look at her. And she quit crying and she smiled at me. And I knew that we were going to be in the good.”

Nessa’s father, Shawn Gasciogne, told KSN, “If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have this beautiful baby here right now and we are forever grateful.”

Hogenson also told KSN that he feels he and Nessa will have a “bond for life.”
