Mom who abandoned disabled son for tryst returned to Philly

The Philadelphia woman accused of abandoning her quadriplegic son in the

woods for nearly a week so she could visit her boyfriend in Maryland is back in the city in police custody in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia police took custody Friday of Niya Parler, 41, who faces attemptedmurder charges in a case that drew national attention.

Police say a hiker found Parler’s 21-year-old son lying in leaves and coveredby a blanket in the woods near 59th Street and Cobbs Creek Parkway on April 10. Nearby were a Bible and his wheelchair.

Police say that while at the hospital, the victim’s aunt arrived. She toldinvestigators that officials from the victim’s school had called on April 6 when he hadn’t showed up. She called her sister who sent a text message back saying “we’re ok.”

The aunt believed this meant that the victim was with his mother.

Police located Parler at her boyfriend’s house in Montgomery County, Md. one day after her son was found. She was hospitalized after taken into custody,

but waived extradition to Philadelphia earlier this week.
