The force of the impact ripped the door from the van, authorities stated, adding that the man who was hit was dragged approximately 20 feet. He was taken to Temple Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:15 a.m.

According to published reports, the driver was dropping off members of his church group when he was struck.

The driver who hit him fled northbound on Front Street, and police believed he was driving a dark, older model Saab that may now have front fender damage, a flat front passenger-side tire and possible scuffing on the passenger-side mirror.

Police found a thin chrome insert with the Saab logo at the scene.
