Wounded mother protected son from husband during double stabbing: cops

A husband who allegedly attacked his wife and children with a knife before fleeing the state is now charged in the crime, police said Thursday.

Stephen Burton, 41, is accused of stabbing his wife Danecia Berrienaround 12:30 a.m. on Sunday at the home they shared on the 1900 block of Dallas Street.

He is now facing charges includingattempted murder and aggravated assault.

Berrien sustained multiple stab wounds during the attack.

Burton also stabbed his 21-month-old daughter in the chest.

Police now also say that Burton attempted to stab his 4-year-old son, who was present, but that Berrien”was able to stop the offender,” according to the police report. The boy sustained a superficial head wound during the fight.

Burton then fled the scene.

Around 8 p.m. Sunday, he was stopped by police while traveling on I-95 near the Fort McHenry tunnel inBaltimore City and was arrested, police say.

Burton was extradited back to Philadelphia on Wednesday.
