Team Twitter accounts are typically more conservative than Jim Nantz at Sunday brunch. They rarely say anything other than basic stats about their team (all positive) and attempt to drive up ticket sales.
But @RedSox and @RaysBaseball made things interesting Monday night. Coming off a dramatic game in which the Sox got squeezed (a blown call at home by umpire Jerry Meals), tensions were running high between the two AL East rivals. Tampa had just grabbed the division lead from the Red Sox and lived to tweet about it. @RaysBaseball had this to say about the AL East altering victory:
RaysBaseball: Dear @RedSox scoreboard operator – your standings are wrong. Yours truly, @RaysBaseball.
@RedSox, an account which 99.9 percent of the time tweets out things like: “A great stretch for baseball. Get #RedSox Mariners tix until 3pm @ http://redsox.com/tickets or Gate E 5:40pm pic.twitter.com/CTYQHzHvsx” quickly responded with a tremendous retort:
“Don’t worry @raysbaseball we look forward to seeing you in Tampa in September for our home games at the Trop.”
Translation:Your fans suck and don’t show up to your games, and we have a crusty batch of retirees living in and around St. Petersburg who will gobble up those tickets faster than you can say ‘”Steinbrenner.”
