Multiple sources said the Red Sox and designated hitter David Ortiz avoided arbitration Monday, just hours before their scheduled hearing, and settled on a 1-year, $14.5 million deal that will bring back the slugger for the 2012 season.
Ortiz had been looking for a $16.5 million deal and the Sox were offering $12.6 million.
“Big Papi” made $12.5 million last season as he hit .309 with a .398 OBP, hitting 29 homers and driving in 96 runs.
