BOSTON — The Celtics live to see another day.
Just barely.
Boston overcame a Knicks second-half comeback to beat them in overtime, 97-90. Jason Terry came up huge in overtime, scoring nine points in a row to keep the Knicks and Carmelo Anthony at bay.
Boston’s 20-point third-quarter lead evaporated in third quarter when Kevin Garnett left the game after picking up his fourth foul. The Knicks went on a 12-2 run before Garnett was inserted back into the lineup, but that didn’t stop the bleeding.
New York clawed its way back and trailed by just three points heading into the fourth quarter thanks to Raymond Felton’s 16 third-quarter points compared to the Celtics’ 14 total points.
Carmelo Anthony scored 36 points for the Knicks, but on 35 shots (not including 20 free throw attempts), as Boston played superb defense on him in the first half, and kept on him in the second. But New York was determined to go though him anyways without J.R. Smith.
Paul Pierce and Jeff Green once again led the C’s in scoring. Pierce finished with 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Green dropped 26 points and added 6 rebounds. Once again, Kevin Garnett grabbed 17 rebounds.
What they’ll be saying: It wasn’t pretty. At all. Boston once again fell flat on its face in the second half, scoring just 30 total points after scoring 32 in the second quarter. But somehow, some way the team kept its head above water and never lost complete control. There’s not much time to celebrate though. Boston is still down 3-1 in the series heading back to New York where J.R. Smith awaits. A win there, and momentum may begin to shift. If not, it’ll be a long summer for the Celtics.
