A Jets backfield that’s already relatively unproven has been hit hard in recent weeks with injuries and off-the-field issues. But over the past two days, the return of Chris Ivory to the practice field following a hamstring injury is a bit of good news.

Ivory, who had been limited primarily to riding the stationary bicycle for much of training camp, was forced to sit out the preseason opener in Detroit last Friday night. It looks like Ivory, acquired this offseason in a trade with the Saints, is fully healthy after consecutive days of practice this week. He should see the field Saturday night when the Jets host the Jaguars in their second game of preseason.

He labeled the upcoming preseason game a “possibility.”

“I still need to be out there and get a couple more reps just to get more of the feel but for the most part I felt pretty good,” Ivory told reporters yesterday.

Ivory has yet to play a full season in three years in the NFL, with 12 games in 2010 representing his largest chunk of playing time to date. Through three years, he has 1,207 rushing yards on 256 carries with eight touchdowns. He has only three catches in the entirety of his career.

He comes in with reputation as being a strong runner between the tacklers but he’s hoping to shed the label of being just a power running back this season.

“I think that’s something you’ll have to judge for yourself once you see me in live action,” Ivory said. “A lot of people try to put you in a category. I’m not just a power back, I can do everything. But you’ll just have to see when the time comes.”
