Close call for A-Rod

Fans were treated to the wrong kind of A-Rod drama after toughing out a two and a half hour rain delay yesterday afternoon.

Alex Rodriguez remained stuck on 599 homers for the third straight game after he was hit by a pitch in a 12-6 win over the Royals. The slugger sprawled to the ground after being struck in the left hand in the eighth inning. He got up moments later and slowly trotted to first before being lifted for a pinch runner.

“Obviously my hands are so central and it’s very easy to break a bone, so I’m glad that none of that happened,” Rodriguez said.

A-Rod expects to play tonight in Cleveland, where he has homered 10 times.

“He’s fine. I went and saw him and he could squeeze fine,”?manager Joe Girardi said. “It didn’t hit him flush.”

Rodriguez was relieved to avoid serious injury but was frustrated he failed to join the 600 home run club in front of the home fans.

“It was amazing they stuck around. I’m just disappointed that we couldn’t share the moment together,” he said. “Hopefully some of these fans will come back in October and we’ll give them some real moments.”
