Irishman steals show at US Open

When all the dust had settled, Graeme McDowell had broken a 40-year title drought by Europeans at the U.S. Open.

The 30-year-old native of Northern Ireland took advantage of a nightmare start by playing partner Dustin Johnson to take control. Johnson began the day with a commanding three-stroke, but he threw it away by dropping seven shots in six holes.

McDowell shot an even-par 71 to win yesterday by one stroke over Gregory Havret. Ernie Els (2-over) was third, with Phil Mickelson (3-over) and Tiger Woods (3-over) in tow.
