Why Kyrie Irving trade to Knicks might not work

If New York Knicks fans wanted a little relief from the Carmelo Anthony trade saga, they received it over the weekend when Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving informed his team that he wanted to be traded this summer.

His destinations of preference? The San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat…and New York Knicks.

Forget newly-drafted 18-year-old Frenchman Frank Ntilikina, roll out the red carpet for New York’s best point guard since Walt Frazier in the 25-year-old, 2016 NBA-champion Irving. He put up the best season of his career last year, averaging 25.2 points and 5.8 assists per game; numbers that haven’t been seen in the Knicks’ backcourt in decades.

This almost seems too good to be true, honestly. The Knicks have an All-Star of their own, although an aging one, that they want to deal in Anthony and he has said in the past that he’s willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to either the Houston Rockets or Cavaliers

Of course, though, things like this don’t just work out that way for the Knicks.

There is a possibility that the Cavaliers would forego a pursuit of Anthony and instead inquire about Kristaps Porzingis, the future of the Knicks’ franchise. It has been reported though that Porzingis is rightfully not available in any kind of trade talks, which is a stark contrast from about a month ago when Phil Jackson was still running the show.

While his name hasn’t cropped up in trade talks, young center Willy Hernangomez is another asset the Knicks might not want to part with, either.

If Cleveland is hellbent on getting either of those players, no way will Irving be wearing blue and orange next year.

However, should the Knicks package Anthony up with a couple first-round draft picks, you could actually see one of the best point guards in basketball call Madison Square Garden home.
