Willie Colon is back on the field for the Jets and he looks to have taken a big step forward in his quest to be ready for training camp.

A few weeks before organized team activities (OTAs), the Jets starting right guard hurt his knee while running with some of his teammates. A closer look at an MRI following the injury determined he needed a knee scope. He missed the rest of OTAs and will miss minicamp as well but he hopes to be back for training camp in late July.

“I will be back for camp,” Colon told Metro New York. “Hopefully, God willing at least, I plan on it.”

Colon stretched with teammates and did some opening individual drills with the offensive line on the first day of minicamp Tuesday. After a few minutes, he went to the stationary bicycle where he spent the majority of practice.

He said he is allowed to practice “against air” but can’t do anything too aggressive. Today marked his first day on the field this spring.

The hardest part for Colon is the time away from the rest of the offensive line. Right tackle Breno Giacomini was signed this offseason to replace Austin Howard, the team’s starting right tackle for the past two seasons. This could have been time spent jelling with Giacomini.

“I was disheartened; I wanted to be next to Breno. Chemistry is big on the offensive line,” Colon said. “So I’m sitting next to him in film and trying to help as much as I can. It’s not the same but it’s good to help. I can’t wait to be back though.”
